summary of the battle of Xanadu: for those with environmental concern

This part of the website will most interest environmentalists; folks from South Bergen County NJ;  and those interested in power struggles. Comments are not in date order. It is a collection of essays; newspaper articles; humor; poems; videos; and statements: all clarifying a proposed mega-mall project, formerly coined by developers as "Xanadu" now renamed "American Dream." Several professional websites are referred to for further information; scientific and technical items; and data. Information here can be heavy - you should probably have an interest before you dig in. On the lighterr side of thinking is our "Fresh Thoughts" menu - in the menu options to left of website. Give it a shot.

ENTRIES ARE NOT IN DATE ORDER : Join us in our peaceful protest.

For 15 years, the citizens of South Bergen County, NJ have been facing the threat of construction of one of the world's biggest malls, built on a sprawling environmentally sensitive wetland area known as the NJ Meadowlands.

In recent years, environmentalists have beeen successful in creating a few beautiuful wetland parks in the area. Bald Eagles have returned to the area, fish have re-populated the rivers and outdoors folks have found the area to be an incredible sanctuary for hiking, canoeing, rafting and boating.

QUESTIONS FOR THE PUBLIC

1/   Xanadu is being constructed on a flood plain. NASA predicts water levels will rise significantly on these plains over the next several years. Who pays for flood mitigation when the waters rise on Xanadu?

2/  Have those who were sold bonds supporting the continued construction of Xanadu been legally informed that Xanadu is being constructed on a flood plain?

3/  a/  Traffic studies indicate that the roads surrounding Xanadu will not be adequate to handle the increased traffic that the mega-mall will bring.

b/  The company that is building Xanadu received significant terror threats targeting a mega-mall in Minnesota owned by that company.

c/  Has Homeland Security given the go-ahead to build a mega-mall on the front-line of NYC - a primary target?

d/  Roads surrounding Xanadu are some of the most heavily traveled roads in the U.S.

What would grid-lock mean for evacuation?

Tri-State Transportation Campaign debunks Xanadu

WINS 1010 AM news Radio reported that the Tri-State Transportation Campaign released a public statement seriously questioning the traffic planning for the proposed Xanadu/American Dream  mega-mall.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign is a non-partisan watchdog group with a lengthy and respected history of accurate transportation reporting and activism. It provides statistically professional insight while it takes legal stands on transportation issues and plans in NJ/NY/CT. The TSTC is supported by engineering teams and legal departments.

GOALS OF THE XANADOO-DOO / AMERICAN NIGHTMARE PROTEST OUTLINED

goals of the demonstration
Peaceful demonstration comment #3: goals of the demonstration

These questions have been asked and, most likely, will be asked again: What are the goals of your peaceful demonstration? What are you trying to accomplish?

Our answer is this: If we were bankers or public officials that were trying to put one over on the public, would we desire that full disclosure be required of our actions?

XANADU / AMERICAN DREAM MEGA-MALL PEACEFUL PROTEST DEMONSTRATION

XANADU / AMERICAN DREAM MEGA-MALL PEACEFUL PROTEST DEMONSTRATION -----

On 1/11/12, a peaceful demonstration was launched on Marginal Road, Rutherford NJ, adjacent to the State Highway Route 3 construction project during the A.M. rush hour - (to be visible - around 7am-8am Tuesdays and Fridays when possible).

The demonstration is in response to the Xanadu / American Dream mega-mall proposition which would project to open in 2015. This alleged mall intends to force construction of a structure with the largest carbon-footprint in the state of NJ in an ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE PROTECTED wetland park at the foot of New York City.

The project, debated for several years, will need NJ state taxpayer funds to subsidize its building in a supportive bailout of this strictly private-enterprise project.

Dullmusic and scores of other citizen-protective activist organizations and scores of informed individuals are adamantly opposed to this mall-blight on NJ's environmental record. We consider it unconscionable that powers-to-be would deceptively force this project on the citizens of this recuperating environmental area. --------

Demonstration signs will read: "XANA-DOO-DOO" / "AMERICAN NIGHTMARE" --- an apt re-naming of "Xanadu / American Dream." An updated blog will be lodged here in the BATTLE of XANADU menu of the JMH Dull Production website. Additional generic environmental thoughts are often found in the "fresh thoughts" menu of this website.

A Vision of Safety

Here’s a math problem for the statistically oriented folks in our region: 1. Take the number of traffic deaths and accidents that occured on Rutherford highways and ramps since the inception of DOT construction in the area. 2. Compare it to the number of traffic deaths and accidents that occured on Rutherford highways and ramps during an identical time segment previous to construction. 3. Chart the traffic deaths and accidents that occur for an extended time frame, post-construction. (In fairness we must add traffic deaths and accidents in the entire south end of Rutherford - consequential and extreme changes in traffic patterns will become a resultant statistical part of the construction project’s safety rating. Correlate all the information, and then we will have a true idea of the “safety vision” that the NJDOT has gifted us with.

SIERRA CLUB CONTINUES DISSEMINATING INFO ON XANADU/AMERICAN DREAM

WHERE ARE YOU ON THIS???--- (**the following is an excerpt from a July 10 release by the Sierra Club**)- "A poll came out in June showing that 58% of New Jersey residents do not want tax money to be used to help out the American Dream mall. However Triple Five, the Canadian based company developing the mall has asked for tax-free financing that could be as much as $800 million. Triple Five already has received $350 million because of a no subsidy cap that was passed in June. In total they could receive $1.15 billion through subsidies and government financing." [See "peace demonstration" menu] - THIS BASICALLY MEANS THAT 58% OF NEW JERSEYANS ARE OPPOSED TO XANADU. - WITHOUT A TAX DOLLAR BAIL-OUT, THE PROJECT STOPS. – Will we tell public servants where to stand? - Currently, bureaucrats are deviously forcing this issue. - The roles should be rightfully reversed. Citizens tell public servants what to do. - Public servbants work for citizens, and citizens pay them for their work. - 58% opposed is a considerable majority - This is a democracy. Autocracies are for those who need to be spoon fed.

Past Dates

in the name of jobs

IN THE NAME OF "JOBS

Dear Editor - Post World War Two industrialists gave lots of folks in our area jobs. While doing so, they dumped mega-tons of chemicals into our rivers and tarnished our waterways for decades still to come. The towns in our area are seldom called "river-towns" because two of the most polluted rivers in the country border them - chemical laden and dangerous.

Now, in the name of "jobs" and progress, the new industrialists would build a structure which would boast the largest carbon footprint in the state of NJ in the middle of this slow-mending environmental wasteland. They, like the industrialists of old, promise a boost to our welfare.

Our children will pay the price of that poison and lack of foresight just as we pay the price now for the polluted rivers gifted by our predecessors. If construction of the Xanadu/American Dream mega-mall is permitted to continue, those public servants that decide in its favor will bear the same legacy as the industrialist polluters of yesteryear.

It is our responsibility to teach our children well, demonstrating that we have learned from past errors of judgment. Helen and John Dull - Rutherford, NJ

APPLAUSE!!! APPLAUSE!!! for gutsy visionaries. innovators

There is a group lobbying for the relinquishment of the former Xanadu site to the Rutgers and Princeton Environmental Science Departments. The plan, apparently, would be to establish the globe's foremost environmental research center and school there.

What more fitting place for an advanced environmental idea than at this site which holds such a tarnished history of environmental greed and graft. The school would compliment the legacy of those who tirelessly fought for the region's mend. It's only a plus that this concrete statement would be at the foot of the world's most prominent city - a visual and compelling commitment to the globe's future generations. Hurray for the futuristic thinking of courageous visionaries.

construction workers, jobs and xanadu

construction workers
Peaceful demonstration comment - construction workers

Some proponents of Xana-doo-doo / American Nightmare use this logic: "Xanadu will create thousands of construction jobs for workers."

Our answer is this:

1. We have great respect for skilled workers who labor diligently at impressive goals. They are normally very tough people who clock in and deserve hard-earned pay for their skilled efforts.

2. Some of these workers, out of fear, tend to wimp out and become impotent slaves to projects that will ultimately   hurt their children. They give in to the pressures of the bosses.

3. Others, courageous,  will opt for the high road for the common good. They will understand that, in the case of Xanadu, the "ideal" in question here is of greater importance than the short term gratification of work on a bad project.

rising waters - being "smarter than the storm"

PUBLISHED IN NORTH JERSEY NEWSPAPERS and the STAR LEDGER - June 2013

Dear Editor:

Now that NASA and the National Weather Bureau have projected a significant rise in water levels in this area in the near future, does it make sense to build a mega-mall in a flood plain?

The proposed Xanadu project is a “free enterprise” project that will be subsidized by millions of citizen tax dollars.

Who is throwing our money into this?

Can we become "smarter than the storm?"

Sincerely,

Helen and John Dull

Rutherford

"If you see something, say something"

Dear Editor:

“If you see something, say something.”

This may not be as obvious as an unattended purse on a bus or train, but this is what we are seeing and saying in regards to our Meadowlands:

1. Two recent bridge accidents on the Route 3 corridor affected traffic significantly. With a bit more force, a bridge accident could shut down one
of the major response and evacuation paths in the metro area.
2. Events at the Meadowlands Complex and yearly holiday rush can snarl traffic flow in this area.
3. Highly flammable fuel tanker trains travel through this area at night.
4. A dated train bridge in this area is the major conduit for rail traffic from Boston to D.C. and beyond.
5. Googling recent hazmat incidents involving trucks, trains and facilities in this area gives one an eyeful.
6. The international ports that we host cannot keep up with the demand to adequately inspect thousands of imported containers for dangerous and
      illegal materials.
7. Laser attacks have been on the rise, and this area host several airports.
8. Now that mega-malls have become internationally publicized targets for fanatics, we are considering plopping one of the biggest malls in the
U.S. right in the middle of this toxic brew.

Where are our Homeland Security strategists? Who is giving the green light on this master plan for the meadows? Who is figuring evacuation strategies for one of the most heavily populated areas in the U.S.?
A simple diversion tactic at Xanadu would soften security at hundreds of significant targets in this area. Who are the bureaucrats signing off on this mess? How thin can we spread ourselves?

The above may not be as obvious as an unattended purse on a bus or train, but this is what we are seeing and saying.
Who has in mind the secure welfare and quality of life of the citizens who have maintained this area for decades?
What do you see?
